How to choose a swim dress in New Zealand
A swim dress is a swimsuit with a skirted overlay. It is the right choice when you want more coverage than a bikini, still want to swim, and prefer something that looks closer to a summer dress on the sand. In New Zealand sizing, fit the hip first, then the bust.
Swim dress vs bikini vs one-piece
Bikini** — maximum sun, more adjusting, best if you like a separate top and bottom.
One-piece** — secure for swimming and playing with kids; long-sleeve versions add UV coverage.
Swim dress** — skirt covers hips and thighs; easier to walk to the ice-cream shop without a full cover-up.
If you want sun-smart arms, choose a puff-sleeve or long-sleeve swim dress rather than a triangle set.
Fit in NZ sizes
Use NZ 8–16 (AU-aligned). Measure hip at the fullest point. Between sizes ? Size up. Stretch fabric will ease, but a skirt that is tight across the hip rides up in the water.
What to look for
1. Lined front — avoids transparency when wet.
2. Skirt length — mid-thigh is the everyday option; longer reads more modest.
3. Straps you can live in — wide straps for all-day, thinner for styling.
4. A cover-up only if you want cafe-ready. Many swim dresses already pass as a holiday dress.
